Mac OSX Hard Disk Recovery

Couldn’t mount a disk image taken from a failing HDD.

1. Attach the image file in osx:
hdiutil attach -noverify -nomount /path/to/disk.dmg

2. Download Photorec from http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download, unpack and launch the binary file

3. Select the attached disk, confirm it’s name through terminal:
diskutil list

4. Configure options in Photorec and leave it restoring what it can!

Corrupted Hard Disk Recovery

Using “dd” inside of OSX I was able to copy the affected disk bit by bit to an image file and then convert that file to a readable format for OSX to mount:

1. Get device ID of disk via

"diskutil list"

then created the image via:

dd bs=512 if=/dev/XXX of=/some_dir/foo.dmg conv=noerror,sync

2. Next I converted the .dmg to an img for mounting via

hdiutil convert input.dmg -format UDTO -o output.img
